Container Volumes to Keep on Rising

Singapore-based port administrator PSA International dealt with 9.8 percent more container volumes in 2017, contrasted with the earlier year.

The organization recorded an aggregate of 74.24 million TEUs at its port undertakings around the globe for  December 31, 2017.

PSA’s leader office, PSA Singapore Terminals contributed 33.35 million TEUs, while terminals outside Singapore took care of 40.89 million TEUs, ascending by 9 percent and 10.4 percent year-on-year, individually.

Tan Chong Meng, Group CEO of PSA, said that in 2017, the worldwide economy saw some recuperation and brilliant spots of development in spite of the fact that the shipping business kept on confronting challenges as the gigantic flood of solidification and alliancing in 2016 started to show its full impacts operationally.

The CEO remarked that PSA showed strength and performed sensibly well against the challenging background and extreme rivalry.





Bunkering Operations Suspended

According to Global Service Maritime (GSM) and GAC, and due to suspicious infiltrations in Depositi Costieri Trieste, the company managing the bunker deposit in the port, all bunkering operations with place at Port of Trieste, Italy, have been suspended.

Few months ago, the port authority requested an information report related to the anti-mafia law, as part of the authorization procedure for the modification of the shareholdings.

Following the recent events, the President of the Port System Authority, Zeno D’Agostino said: “First of all, we will work together with the commissioners to find an immediate solution to ensure the supply of fuel to the Port of Trieste, which will resume in the coming days, and to safeguard the employees of Depositi Costieri”.

President D’Agostino made enphasis on the following: “The Port of Trieste has not been infiltrated in any way by organized crime,” – Claiming that this unfortunate event with Depositi Costieri Trieste was a totally apart issue and was treated immediately.




Challenging Times for Tanker Owners

According to Gibson Shipbrokers, 2018 may be a very busy year, perhaps the busiest since 2010 when it comes to deliveries. For 2018, 40 million dwt of crude and product tankers (over 25,000 dwt) are expected to be delivered, compared to the 35.5 million of 2017.

U.S. crude production is expected to average 775,000 b/d higher for this 2018. Also, there’s a growth expected from Kazakhstan, Brazil, and Libya, according to the Shipbroker.

“Given the anticipated fundamentals for 2018, delivery delays are expected to remain a feature, and for the crude sector in particular, and could increase relative to 2017. However, the same fundamentals are likely to encourage scrapping activity; which, when coupled with slippage, could help offset some of the supply growth for 2018,” 






MAN Cryo to supply LNG pipeline for Swedegas

MAN Diesel and Turbo’s gas, and marine fuels and LNG manufacturer, MAN Cryo, secured a contract with Swedish infrastructure company Swedegas to supply a liquefied natural gas storage facility in the port of Gothenburg. This gas pipeline will provide a more flexible solution for LNG customers and suppliers and will be open to multiple suppliers.

With this new facility vessels will be allowed to store LNGs of trucks or containers while at the same time there is cargo loading and unloading at the docks in the Port Power Port, thus dispensing with the need to make a separate refueling stop. The Managing Director of MAN Diesel Turbo, Sweden, Mikael Adler, said that the company is very excited to have won the contract to build the first bunkering facility in the important port of Gothenburg. He added that they are able to offer robust, intelligent and flexible solutions to the market, which is in line with this new strategic project.

China to Boost Cruise Ship Construction

The Chinese government has made cruise shipbuilding its main target in its Made in China 2025 program, in order to take advantage of the $ 117 billion industry profitability with improvements to its domestic capacity, which is why Chinese shipbuilders are increasingly interested in being part of cruise shipbuilding, whose segment accounted for almost half of the world’s orders last year.

According to China Daily, the vice president of the Chinese organizing committee of Marintec China reported that in addition to China’s State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) there are other Chinese builders such as China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and China Merchants Heavy Industry, whose industries are proactive in the construction of cruises.

As part of CSSC, by 2023 the first cruise ship built locally in China is expected to be delivered by Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. In addition CSSC is working with Fincantieri and Lloyd’s Register on the cruise ship construction project which has also had the task of bringing in foreign suppliers such as Wartsila to set up joint ventures.

Russian Warship Close to UK Waters

“I will not hesitate in defending our waters or tolerate any form of aggression.

“Britain will never be intimidated when it comes to protecting our country, our people, and our national interests.”

Those were the words of Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson regarding the Russian warship Admiral Gorshkov.

On December 23rd, Frigate HMS St Albans was called to escort Admiral Gorshkov since it was to be very close from UK waters, and spent Christmas keeping track of Admiral Gorshkov’s activity while close to UK territorial waters.

Apparently, this holidays season has come along with an upsurge of Russian ships transiting these waters.




Petrobras continues with its investment commitment

Regardless being pointed as the world’s most indebted oil company, Petrobras has announced they will stick to its investment commitment for the next 5 years period (2018-2022). The estimated amount of investment is around the $74.5 billions of dollars, a little bit more than the last investment in the previous period (2017-2021) for $74.1 billions.

The forecast is to spend $60.3 billions in exploration and production and the 57% of that investment will be on the pre-salt layer, including $18.9 billions on Campos Basin.

In order to reduce its debt, Petrobras is working on divesting assets, at the same time they are planning to boost the production. They are expecting to achieve a daily production of 3.55 millions of barrels of oil.


Diana Containerships and Wan Hai Lines

The Post Panamax, MV Hamburg,  one of the container vessels of Diana Containerships Inc, has entered into a charter contract with Wan Hai Lines, from Singapore. Not directly, but through a separate subsidiary – The company specializing in the ownership of containerships said.

Diana Containerships Inc.’s fleet currently consists of 11 container vessels (6 Post-Panamax and 5 Panamax) including now the Hamburg, a 6,494 TEU container vessel built in 2009, that was previously chartered to CMA CGM, at a gross charter rate of US$6,700 per day, minus a fee of 3.5% of commission for third parties. Now, starting from December 1st, the gross charter rate is $11,000 per day, minus a slightly different commission of 3.75% paid to third parties.

Around US$1.32 million of gross revenue is estimated for this contract, for the minimum scheduled period of the time charter.

Sea Traffic Management Project

At the end of 2015, the validation project Sea Traffic Management, aimed to connect the simulators of different European centers of maritime training. The European Union’s STM has successfully installed the first bridge systems compatible with maritime traffic management, which connect ships with ground services.

The STM project is funded by the European Union and is a continuation of the MONALISA 2.0 project in which a system was developed which allows the sharing of vessel route information between ships and land centers. The tests with the STM have been carried out on the ships Stena Germanica and two rescue ships of the Swedish Society of Rescue of the Sea: Rescue Marta Collin and Rescue 11-0.

Also the Stena Germanica, on the route from Göteborg to Kiel, automatically shared its route with the two rescue boats and at the same time received its routes and showed them in the ECDIS. The test showed that all the available functions work perfectly, including the optimization of routes and calls to synchronized ports.

ABB Fights Ocean Pollution

The Technology Services Company, ABB, has expressed its support for the Ocean Pollution Control Group by providing on-board systems and expertise to support research trips carried out by a charity whose primary mission and purpose is to highlight the damage caused by the millions of tons of plastics that end up polluting the waters of the world’s oceans every year.

The environmental advocacy group that is benefiting is called By the Ocean We Unite (BTOWU), which has installed a state-of-the-art Marine Advisory System which includes MeteoGroup SPOS Onboard meteorological routing software in the yacht Fantastiko.

This ingenious system will help the crew of the BTOWU to plan and monitor weather conditions on a research trip in the waters of Rotterdam, the South of England, the Channel IslandsFrance and Belgium. The trip, of around 17 days, is comprised by the team of professionals onboard Fantastiko  which will work in support of scientists who investigate the sources and impacts of plastic pollution on one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

In this sense Thomas van Thiel of By the Ocean We Unite stated that it is currently estimated that 23,000,000 kilos of plastics are dumped into the world’s oceans every minute.
